Thailand has long been a favourite for Indian travellers, but what makes it particularly compelling as a destination for Indian weddings today?
Thailand offers something few destinations can match: diversity within a relatively accessible geography. Couples can choose between Phuket’s beaches, Koh Samui’s tropical luxury, Bangkok’s sophisticated hospitality, Hua Hin’s relaxed elegance, Krabi’s dramatic landscapes and Chiang Mai’s cultural character. For Indian weddings, this variety allows every celebration, from an intimate pheras ceremony to a wedding spread across several days with hundreds of guests, to have its own personality. Equally important is Thailand’s established hospitality infrastructure and experience in hosting international groups, which makes destination weddings far more seamless.
Beyond the postcard perfect beaches, what are some underrated Thai destinations or wedding experiences that Indian couples should explore?
The opportunity today is to look beyond the conventional beach wedding. Hua Hin, for instance, offers refined seaside resorts and a more relaxed setting, while Krabi brings spectacular limestone landscapes and intimate resort experiences. Khao Lak works beautifully for couples looking for privacy and a celebration led by the resort, away from the bustle. Further north, Chiang Mai offers a completely different proposition, combining heritage, wellness, nature and Northern Thai culture, and Chiang Rai takes that serenity further still, with misty hills and quiet luxury. Inland, Khao Yai has become Thailand’s wine country, all vineyards and cool evenings within easy reach of Bangkok, while Kanchanaburi offers rivers, jungle and a restorative pace by the water. Couples are increasingly looking for a destination that becomes part of their wedding story, not simply a backdrop for photographs.
Indian weddings can involve several hundred guests and multiple functions. How well equipped is Thailand to handle the scale and complexity of a traditional Indian wedding?
Thailand has considerable experience in hosting large international celebrations and group events. Many hotels and resorts have extensive banquet and outdoor spaces, multiple accommodation categories, professional event teams and established relationships with wedding planners and suppliers. This becomes particularly valuable for Indian weddings, where a single celebration can involve mehendi, haldi, sangeet, wedding ceremonies and receptions. The key is early planning: venue capacity, guest movement, catering requirements, décor permissions and technical production should all be discussed with the property well in advance.
Food is often one of the biggest concerns for Indian families travelling abroad. How is Thailand responding to the culinary expectations of Indian wedding guests?
Food has become an important part of Thailand’s destination wedding proposition. Major hospitality properties understand that Indian weddings require much more than simply adding a few Indian dishes to a buffet. Wedding planners and hotels increasingly work with Indian chefs or specialised catering teams to develop menus around regional preferences, dietary requirements and the different functions of a wedding. At the same time, couples can create interesting culinary experiences by combining Indian celebrations with Thai flavours, local ingredients and menus inspired by the destination. The result can be both familiar and exploratory.
Thailand has a wide range of experienced caterers capable of meeting the growing demand for authentic Indian cuisine at Indian weddings held in Thailand. With an increasing number of Indian weddings taking place across the country, the availability of specialised Indian catering services provides greater flexibility and choice for wedding planners and clients.
Thailand has a tropical climate. What should couples know about choosing the right season for their wedding?
Seasonality should be one of your first decisions. Thailand has no single best month, because the climate varies by region, so choose the destination and the dates together. As a broad guide, the cooler and drier months from November to April suit outdoor celebrations across most of the country. Whenever you plan an outdoor event, build in a contingency, because a good resort can always offer an equally beautiful covered alternative if the weather turns.
Destination weddings are evolving from a single wedding day into celebrations that span several days. What trends are you seeing that could particularly appeal to Indian couples?
The biggest shift is towards weddings built around experiences. Couples are asking: What will our guests remember besides the ceremony? In Thailand, that could mean a private island excursion, a Thai cooking experience, a wellness morning, a sunset cruise, a Muay Thai session, a cultural visit or a curated local market experience. We are also seeing greater interest in intimate weddings, personalised décor, celebrations built around wellness, and celebrations that bring several generations together. Sustainability is another important conversation, with couples becoming more conscious about food waste, décor reuse, local sourcing and responsible celebrations.
Finally, if you had to give one piece of advice to an Indian couple considering Thailand for their wedding, what would it be?
Choose the experience before choosing the photograph. Thailand offers spectacular locations, but the strongest weddings are those where the destination, venue, season, guest profile and wedding design work together. Think about your guests’ journey, from arrival and accommodation to ceremonies, food and experiences. Give yourself sufficient planning time, work with experienced local partners and allow Thailand to become part of the celebration rather than recreating an Indian wedding in another country. The destination should add a new layer to your wedding story.
